Abstract

Narrowband lasers are useful for frequency conversion, beam combining and cleanup, and other nonlinear effects. Advantages of lengthening the laser pulse while keeping the energy constant include reduced atmospheric transmission problems, higher impulse delivered to a target, and lower stress placed on laser system optics. A 300-MHz narrowband e-beam-pumped XeCI laser in a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration has been operated for 5-μs pulse widths. The narrowband gain was measured under long- pulse low-pump-rate conditions and indicates that the e-beam-pumped XeCl laser performs well at low pump rates.
