Abstract

Subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) optical communication systems represent a very attractive approach to the design of wideband distribution systems.1 SCM systems provide a way to exploit the multigigahertz bandwidth potential of single-mode optical fiber and optoelectronic components using well-established microwave technology. They also offer a highly flexible way to design broadband systems which can accommodate both analog and digital1–4 modulation formats and can evolve in step with expected changes in video technology. We present the performance results of a twenty- channel SCM system in the 2-6-GHz frequency band over a 9-km single-mode fiber link. Each data channel was modulated using frequency shift keying (FSK) at 100 Mbit/s.
