Compensation of negative group velocity dispersion in optical fibers with a grating and telescope pulse compressor

Abstract

The maximum information transmission rate of optical fiber communications is limited by the amount of the group velocity dispersion (GVD) at different wavelengths.1 The highest theoretical rate is obtained at the zero dispersion point (typically 1.3 µm). However, optical fibers have the lowest loss in the 1.5-µm spectral region, which makes this region very attractive for optical communications, But significant negative GVD in this region (about — 15 ps/nm X km) limits the information rate due to the pulse broadening. Currently there is no effective technique for the compensation of the pulse broadening due to negative GVD in optical fibers.
