Abstract

Transparent rare earth crystals continue to pro-vide an important class of efficient solid-state laser medium. The 4fN4fN transitions responsible for the rich variety of sharp absorption and emission lines, although parity-forbidden in the free ions, acquire finite intensity at noncentrosymmetric crystalline sites, in which opposite parity-excited configurations are slightly mixed into 4fN.
