Abstract

The analysis of the frequency modulation (FM) of semiconductor lasers using the rate equations predicts that the phase difference between the frequency deviation and modulation current is 90°, and that the ratio of the FM index β to the AM index m/2 (half of the IM index) is equal to the linewidth enhancement factor α which is independent of the modulation frequency.
