Measurement of magnetic birefringence using a balanced homodyne optical mixer

Abstract

In spite of its wide application capability1, induced magnetic birefringence (Cotton-Mouton effect) has been studied to a limited extent because of the small coefficients involved. In general, a very large magnetic field (up to several tesla) and a long optical path length in the field region have been required to measure the birefringence.
