Abstract

Recently, much interest has been devoted to the optical investigation of ultrafast relaxation processes of various molecules with subpicosecond light pulses. These experiments have significantly increased our knowledge of dynamic properties of matter. In this field one parameter of Importance in understanding molecular excited-state dynamics is the measure of the intramolecular dephasing, which is described in terms of a phenomenological parameter T2. Experiments that aim to detect the variation of the dephasing times of molecules in monolayers and in condensed phases are expected to be able to yield valuable information on the interactions of molecule-molecule and molecule-substrate. However, to succeed in these experiments, techniques which have both ultrahigh time resolution and submonolayer sensitivity are indispensable.
