Tunable ultrashort pulse generation with a fiber grating Raman laser

Abstract

The nonlinear processes of self-phase modulation (SPM) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) have found uses in pulse compression experiments and in the generation of frequency shifted Stokes pulses. The combined action of both effects was recently demonstrated to lead to self- stabilizing compression of Nd:YAG laser pulses.1 Also Stokes pulses should have the potential of being used for pulse compression in a fiber grating compressor because they were found to be up- chirped.2 Until now ultrashort pulse generation of Raman light has been achieved by applying a dispersion compensated fiber Raman oscillator with low output power3 or by operating in the soliton regime.4
