Abstract

The main targets of optical devices may be divided into high bit rate or coherent transmission. In the first system large frequency bandwidth and small chirping are key issues. Chirping especially is crucial. In the latter system, a wide wavelength tuning range, narrow linewidth, and flat FM response are important, in both systems singlelongitudinal-mode lasing is indispensible and a DFB or DBF? structure is inevitable. Here the present characteristics of lasers for those systems are shown.
