Abstract

Third-order nonlinear optical materials recently have attracted considerable interest, because of their potential applications in signal processing in the optical regime. It was first shown that there are large values of χ(3) and last optical responses in semiconductor-doped glasses and metal colloids by Jain and Lind1 and Ricard et al.,2 respectively. We report measurement of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of oxide semiconductor (Fe2O5) clusters coated with an electric dipole layer in solution. The experiment shows that χ(3) in the colloids is 2 orders larger than that in metal colloids.
