Abstract

Differential absorption lidar (DIAL) measurements in the water vapor bands (730 and 940 nm) and the A-band of molecular oxygen (760-770 nm) have been suggested1-3 for profiling atmospheric properties such as humidity, temperature, pressure, and density. For this purpose, intense pulsed laser sources of tunable narrowband radiation in the near IR are necessary. Because similar lasers are available in the visible spectrum, stimufated Raman scattering is one of the most efficient methods for frequency shifting radiation for use in the near IR.
