Abstract

Refractive surgery in ophthalmology is becoming more accepted as a method for modifying refractive errors. The use of the excimer laser ArF (193 nm) in refractive surgery has shown encouraging results on both animal and human trials. The short wavelength of 193 nm from ArF excimer will directly break the molecular bonds of the tissue. This noble property allows 193 nm to offer a noncontact ablation (photodecomposition) interaction with tissue instead of a thermal reaction. The advantages of the excimer laser ArF (193 nm) in refractive surgery are clean incision and precise control over the parameters of the incision.
