Abstract
Direct frequency doubling of laser diodes is an attractive method for obtaining short wavelength coherent light in the blue spectral region.1-2 However, to directly frequency convert to the UV region using bulk nonlinear crystals such as KNbO3, extremely low temperatures are needed for phase matching. We have achieved picosecond UV pulse generation at room temperature by direct frequency doubling in a proton exchanged MgO:LiNbO3 waveguide of a gain switched GaAlAs laser diode.
