Pulsed operation of a pair pumped solid state erbium laser was achieved in earlier experiments reported by Pollack et al.1 Also, cw operation was achieved at 2.8 μm in Er:CaF2 and Er:YLF with conventional excitation.1,2 In this work, however, steady state inversion of the upper laser level is achieved exclusively by upconversion due to Er-Er interactions.
