Efficient phase conjugation using Brillouin enhanced four-wave mixing coupled with a stimulated Brillouin scattering amplifier

Abstract

Brillouin enhanced four-wave mixing (BEFWM) can produce highly amplified phase conjugate replicas of low energy probe inputs, i.e., reflectivities of 3 × 107 for 10−11-J inputs. Unfortunately the pump-to-phase conjugate extraction efficiency for BEFWM in the high reflectivity regime is no more than a few percent. By using the pump energy largely unconverted in the BEFWM process to pump a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) amplifier whose input is the output of the BEFWM conjugator, the BEFWM phase conjugate output can be further amplified to energies that are a sizable portion of the total available pump energy.
