Abstract
Nonlinear optical crystals β-BaB2O4 (BBO) have been grown by the flux method (TSSG or Flux-CZ).1–3 However, the crystal parity was limited by the flux elements involved, such as Na2O, which were added in the raw material melts. This causes the device characteristics to decrease; the optical damage threshold especially seems largely affected by the achieved purity. Another problem in the flux method was its very slow growth rate, for example, 0.5–1.0 mm/ day.3 Furthermore, it was not easy to yield high optical quality crystals by this method.
