Abstract

Double and multiple external cavity configurations are encountered in many real situations such as coupled cavity lasers, optical fiber transmitter modules, and optoelectronic integrated circuits. This configuration has also been found to be useful as a means of inducing stable single diode mode operation with narrow linewidth.1 In Ref. 1, the shorter cavity length is less than the optical path length of the laser chip, and the external cavity length ratio RL is much greater than 10. Here we are interested in a system in which both external cavities are longer than the optical path length of the laser chip and RL is smaller than 10, so that both external cavities cart contribute to the laser linewidth reduction and side-mode suppression. We cart distinguish between two kinds of double external cavity laser: (1) single sided and (2) double sided configurations, as shown schematically in Fig. 1. The two arrangements should be formally equivalent provided that the product of the external cavity reflection coefficients is much less than unity, so that cross-coupling between the cavities in the single sided configuration is negligible.
