Abstract
For high power free electron lasers (FELs), it is necessary to use very long cavities to handle high optical fluxes. Long cavities result in extremely high alignment sensitivities, usually requiring alignment better than 1 μrad. Although the cavity length can be reduced by using grazing-incidence mirrors to spread the beam over a large area, the alignment tolerances are generally not improved with these optical elements compared to the full length cavities. Therefore, extremely high misalignment sensitivity is a critical issue for the development of high power FEL devices.
