Stimulated photorefractive scattering phase conjugators backseeded with retroreflector arrays

Abstract

The threshold for backseeded stimulated photorefractive scattering (SPS) can be dramatically lowered by redirecting a portion of the transmitted laser beam backward into the photorefractive crystal.1,2 Previous demonstrations using perfectly diffuse and nearly perfectly specular reflections as seeds exhibited either large instabilities1 or low reflectivities of ~10%.2 Using a retro-reflective array as the seed,3 we demonstrate stable SPS reflectivities (without internal reflections or circulating loops of light) of up to 60%.
