High output energy density from an x-ray preionized Ar:Xe laser

Abstract

The Ar:Xe laser has been studied for many years. Energies of up to 60 J and efficiencies of up to 3.2% were reported by Basov et al.1 in an electroionized 3.5-atm Ar:Xe laser emitting at 1.73 μm. Such high energies obtained from high pressure Ar:Xe mixtures are attributed, by Lawton et al.,2 to the combination of a large excited- state population created by the high energy e-beam and the low voltage pulse which recirculates the excited state energy.
