Abstract

The 946-nm transition in Nd:YAG has recently attracted interest as a diode laser pumped source for frequency doubling to 473 nm,1,2 thus providing an efficient and compact blue laser source. The 946-nm transition has its lower laser level in the ground state manifold and thus suffers from temperature-dependent reabsorption losses.3 Despite this, Q-switched operation at 946 nm combined with intracavity frequency doubling has been reported for a flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG laser, but in this case the gain medium required cooling by nitrogen gas bubbled through liquid nitrogen.3
