Abstract
Subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) systems have been shown to be a promising approach for broadband fiber optic video distribution networks.1,2 These systems can exploit the wide bandwidth of the optoelectronic components and also take advantage of commercially available microwave components. To improve the receiver sensitivity, we combined the SCM modulation format with coherent detection techniques. Both analog and digital laboratory experiments have demonstrated that coherent SCM systems3-5 can obtain improvements in receiver sensitivity of the order of 14-15 dB over similar direct detection SCM systems.
