Lidar measurement of the upper atmosphere and thin cirrus clouds

Abstract

Practical lidar systems are capable of sensitive remote detection of tenuous aerosols, variations in clear air density and temperature, and thin high altitude clouds (subvisible cirrus). Therefore, lidar technology provides important support for testing and operations of many optical systems including IR search and track, high energy lasers, and laser communications and opens new possibilities for environmental studies in meteorology, climatology, and air pollution monitoring.
