Abstract
Nonlinear-optical measurements in channel waveguides of polydiacetylene (4-BCMU) at 1.319 μm are reported. Single-mode strip-loaded channel waveguides of spin-coated poly(4- BCMU) were linearly characterized and modeled to find accurate TE0 field profiles. A pulse- modulated interferometry method was created to measure the phase-shift difference induced in a nonlinear medium by a mode-locked pulse train with two different intensity levels. For TE polarization, the intensity-dependent refractive index was found to have an electronic contribution, n2 = (4.8 ± 2.7) × 10−8 cm2/MW.
