Abstract

Barium titanate has been extensively investigated for optical phase conjugation and optical signal processing applications because of its strong photorefractive nonimearity.1,2 This paper examines the application of photorefractive beam coupling for encoding temporal information. We believe that this study is the first investigation of femtosecond four-wave mixing in barium titanate. By using two-beam coupling, temporal information from a signal may be spatially encoded as a volume hologram. This approach is related to femtosecond holography except that we demonstrate the reconstruction of stored temporal information from the volume hologram.3
