Long-pulse SBS in high-pressure xenon

Abstract

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is used for phase conjugation in a variety of applications. Compressed gases such as xenon are often used as the SBS medium because of their transparency in the ultraviolet and infrared spectral regions. However, compressed gas media have intrinsically higher thresholds and longer phonon rise times than most liquids, leading to requirements for long-pulse, high-power sources to achieve good fidelity. Previous steady-state SBS experiments in xenon were performed with 40atm xenon.1 Transient SBS experiments have been performed at pressures between 40-46 atm.2 Theoretical predictions indicate that higher density should result in a lower threshold,’ This paper reports the steady-state SBS threshold as a function of xenon pressure for a 1.054-μm source and xenon pressures ranging from 40–100 atm.
