Abstract

Tunable femtosecond infrared pulses with energies above the one microjoule level are useful for the generation of two-pulse photon echoes in fibers, for excitation of molecular vibrations, and for making hot electron plasmas in semiconductors. They may also serve for infrared continuum generation and multiphoton ionization of atoms. Here we demonstrate efficient conversion of amplified colliding-pulse mode-locked dye-laser pulses into femtosecond near and mid infrared pulses in beta barium borate (BBO).
