WIDE FIELD-OF-VIEW HETERODYNE RECEIVERS USING PHOTOREFRACTIVE PHASE CONJUGATORS

Abstract

Conventional coherent optical receivers can only detect a signal efficiently if the signal energy is contained in a single spatial mode (ie. diffraction limited field-of-view). Detecting more than a single spatial mode results in a proportional loss in sensitivity as required by the antenna theorem. Thus, optical communications systems or optical radar systems, employing coherent detection techniques, must utilize auxilliary methods to compensate for wavefront distortion and/or angle-of-arrival fluctuations of the incoming signal. We have been studying the use of non-linear optical techniques for performing coherent detection of an abberated signal with no sensitivity loss.
