Abstract
Various optical techniques are now being studied to exceed the speed limitations of the electrical circuits used in the repeaters of current optical communications systems. Optical-timing extraction circuits (which extract timed clock from input optical signal pulses) are key components for optical-pulse synchronization or all-optical repeaters, but few reports have been made so far.1-4 This report describes an experiment demonstrating the successful operation of a phase- locked loop (PLL) using a traveling-wave laser diode (TW LD) as a phase detector for a 10- Gb/s optical signal.
