Large extension of dynamic range in distributed-fiber strain measurement using Brillouin spectroscopy

Abstract

A technique of measuring distributed strain along silica optical single-mode fibers has recently been proposed.1 This technique relies on the strain dependence of the Brillouin frequency shift vB.2 Previous work was demonstrated over only a few km long fiber using 1.32 μm wavelength light sources. However, 1.55 μm wavelength light sources are preferable for long distance measurement because the silica fiber attenuation is lowest at 1.55 μm. This paper reports the measurement for strain distribution with a high dynamic-range of 25 dB using fiber amplifiers3 at a 1.55 μm wavelength region.
