Abstract

The retroreflector in-space (RIS) is a hollow cube-corner retroreflector with a diameter of 0.5 m for earth-satellite-earth laser long-path absorption measurements of atmospheric trace species. RIS is to be installed on the Japanese polar-orbit satellite ADEOS, which is planned to be launched in early 1995. The structure of RIS is shown in Fig. 1. The optical design of RIS has been carried out at the National Institute for Environmental Studies. A slightly curved surface will be used for one of three mirrors forming the retroreflector, which optimizes the ground pattern of the reflected beam. Figure 2 shows simulated ground patterns of the beam reflected by RIS in orbit.
