Generation of a subnanosecond Raman pulse for alexandrite lasers using polarization switching

Abstract

The alexandrite laser is an intense light source with broadly tunable pulsed output around 750 nm. Its Q-switched. pulse, however, conventionally has a longer width of 30-100 ns, compared with that of the Nd:YAG laser. Extensive efforts have been made to generate shorter pulses: The pulse transmission mode Q-switching technique provided pulses as short as 4 ns in duration, but with the mode-locking technique, still shorter pulses below 220 ps have been generated.
