Abstract
We recently presented results demonstrating a nonlinear cross-section enhancement of the order of one million for surface-emitted harmonic light in GaAs/AlGaAs periodic multilayer waveguides.1 The fundamental guided modes were propagating in opposite directions, and in the case of equal wavelengths, the harmonic was coupled to radiation modes in a direction perpendicular to the waveguide surface. The basic interaction was predicted and subsequently demonstrated almost ten years ago by Stegeman and Normandin in LiNbO3 waveguides.2
