Abstract
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) in optical waveguides enables the construction of a green- or blue-light source; the potential high-conversion efficiency should enable use of the laser diode as a fundamental light source. Quasi-phase matching (QPM), enabling use of the largest nonlinear coefficient (d33) for any arbitrary fundamental wavelength, was recently demonstrated1,2 using periodically domain-inverted lithium niobate (LiNbO3) waveguides. However, the low optical-damage threshold of LiNbO3 limited the output power of the second harmonic.
