Abstract

We have recently demonstrated all-optical switching of picosecond pulses in a zero-gap directional coupler containing GaAs quantum wells,1 The mechanism for the all-optical switch is believed to emanate from the effect of photo-generated carriers on the position of the absorption edge and file screening of the excitons, which combine to give an intensity-dependent refractive index.
