Time-dependent wave-front error measurements for a long-pulse wall-pumped laser

Abstract

For pulsed wall-pumped lasers, a strong transverse refractive index gradient can develop during the pumping pulse. This index gradient acts like a positive cylindrical lens for slab geometries, which greatly complicates energy extraction and can lead to resonator instabilities. The index gradients develop because of the gas motion induced by the spatial nonuniformity associated with wall-pumping heat transfer back into the wall.
