Abstract

Monolithic grating-surface-emitting (CSE) laser amplifier technology is very promising for fabricating monolithic frequency stabilized semiconductor diode laser sources that can produce the high-power narrow-divergence output beams necessary for coherent communication systems applications.¹ In this paper, cw single mode operation of ridge-guided GSE MOPA arrays are reported with powers up to 300 mW cw for 6 cascaded amplifiers. In addition, phase modulation (PM), without frequency modulation, of a GSE MOPA is demonstrated by applying an RF signal to one of the amplifier sections. Alternatively, frequency modulation is obtained by applying an RF signal only to the oscillator. The capability of GSE-MOPA arrays for high power single mode operation either under FM or PM make these devices very attractive for a variety of coherent systems applications.
