Abstract

In recent years, metal vapor excimers such as Zn2 Cd2, and Hg2 have been widely studied. These molecules have attracted interest as possible excimer laser systems. By laser pumping vaporized zinc in a buffer gas mixture, we observed two continuous emission bands centered at 385 run and 424 nm for the first time. The excitation condition and temporal characters of the emission show that they originate from the same 3Σu+. state of molecule Zn2. We measured the molecular quenching rate caused by zinc and buffer gases. The result shows that quenching dominated the emission process.
