Abstract
Optical fibers provide an ideal test bed for the observation of fundamental nonlinear optical processes, such as solitons and modulational instabilities. In fact, for optical pulses up to the picosecond duration, nonlinear wave propagation in fibers is well-described by the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation.
