Abstract

The generation of "transform-limited" optical pulses at infrared wavelength is very important for high bit-rate lime-division multiplexed fiber communication systems. Traditionally, semiconductor lasers are mode-locked using external cavities.1 The use of integrated waveguide cavity and nonuniform pumping of multi-section laser diodes circumvented many problems from the bulk optics such as multiple pulse generation. The repetition rates were significantly improved to 40 and 100 GHz regime.2-6
