Femtosecond continuum generation near 1.5 μm from a color-center oscillator/amplifier system

Abstract

The emergence of fiber-optic communications has fueled interest in femtosecond studies of InP/InGaAs heterostructures and other similar material systems which have a bandgap near 1.3 or 1.55 μm. The wavelength region of 1.2–1.6 μm is of particular interest. Femtosecond continuum pulses have proved to be useful for nondegenerate pump–probe measurements in the visible and the near infrared (near 800 nm). We describe here an amplified color-center laser system which generates femtosecond continuum pulses at kilohertz repetition rates, with starting wavelengths near 1.5 μm.
