Abstract

Video signals have been transmitted via subcarrier multiplexed optical carriers in a variety of modulation formats, including amplitude modulated vestigial side band (AM-VSB)1 and frequency modulation (FM).2 New digital compression standards being developed by the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) are expected to convey high quality video signals at 4-5 Mbit/s. Up to four such signais can be placed on one 16-level quadrature amplitude modulated (16-QAM.) carrier operating with a carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 18-20 dB3 in a 6-MHz. channel. To simulate digital video transmission, modulation depth limits were measured for forty-seven equalized, unmodulated carriers at 6-MHz spacing. In addition, a ninety-four carrier system was built and operated with Fabry-Perot (FP) as well as distributed feedback (DFB) lasers and optional in-line fiber amplifiers.
