Abstract

Amplitude modulated subcarrier multiplexed systems (AM-SCM) have received a great deal of attention during the last several years for transmission of video signals over optical fiber,1,2 AM-SCM systems require highly linear distributed feedback (DEB) lasers with very low relative intensity noise (≤—150 dB/Hz over the frequency band of operation) and high optical power (>1 mW) in order to obtain the signal-to-noise ratios needed to preserve video quality. DFB lasers that meet these stringent requirements must be individually selected, and thus the cost of the DFB laser for these applications is a major portion of the expense of AM-SCM systems. Coupling between longitudinal modes in conventional InGaAsP 1.3 and 1.55 µm Fabry-Perot lasers results in intensity noise3 and nonlinear behavior that prevents quaternary Fabry-Perot lasers front being used for AM video transmission.
