Photorefractive response at large modulation with alternating electric fields

Abstract

Enhancements in the photorefractive two-beam coupling gain can be achieved in sillenite crystals such as Bi12SiO20 (BSO) and Bi12TiO20 (BTO) by the use of alternating electric fields,1 This technique can significantly increase the magnitude of the two-beam coupling over that which would result from the application of a dc field alone. However, the large gain enhancements are achieved only with weak signal beams. For modulation indes m greater than ~0.02 the performance may fall off significantly with increasing m.
