Abstract

Chromium-doped forsterite is a tunable solid-state laser based on Cr4+ as laser-active ion with wide tuning range in the near infrared from 1167-1345 nm.1 Recently, actively mode-locked2 and self mode-locked3 operation of chromium-doped forsterite laser has been demonstrated, producing picosecond pulses. Over the past few years, there has been a surge of activities directed towards generating ultrashort pulses by various methods from tunable solid-state lasers. Focus of interest was titanium-doped sapphire (Ti3+:Al2O3). Sub-100-fs pulses were obtained directly from a Ti:sapphire laser using self-mode-locking,4-6 colliding-pulse mode-locking,7 synchronous pumping,8 and coupled-cavity mode-locking using multiple quantum wells.9
