Reduction of intensity fluctuations by self-pumped phase conjugation in a 400-m atmospheric optical path

Abstract

The influence of atmospheric turbulence often limits the performance of an optical measurement system: when a light beam is propagated through air turbulence, the beam fluctuates in intensity and phase. This problem is serious in such cases as long-distance measurements. In this paper, we use a Cat conjugator (self-pumped PCM utilizing total internal reflection) of a BaTiO3, crystal, with improved response speed (retroreflector in a 400--m optical path) and we find that intensity fluctuations of laser beams are reduced compared with conventional reflectors.
