Abstract

Recently there has been much interest in single frequency Er31' fiber lasers as alternatives to semiconductor lasers for optical communications because of the intrinsic low relative intensity noise and large side-mode suppression ratio.12 Also, wide tunability can be achieved without the difficult alignment required by external cavity semiconductor lasers. Here, we report the operation of a single frequency tunable fiber ring laser emitting at —1.54 pm with side-mc>de suppression ratio of —70 dB (electrical) and a relative intensity noise of -148 dBc/Hz (electrical, at 1 GHz) at an output power of 7.8 mW.
