Abstract
Amplification in the x-ray range requires prodigious energy deposition rates spatially organized in a high-aspect-ratio volume of matter.1 Theoretical studies2–6 indicate that a confined stable mode of propagation can be achieved by relativistic/charge-displacement self-focusing of intense subpicosecond ultraviolet (248 nm) radiation in plasmas. We present what we believe to be the first experimental observations supporting the existence of this phenomenon.
