Abstract
The maximum output power as well as the lifetime of AlGaAs diode lasers is limited by facet degradation and the occurrence of catastrophic optical damage (COD). While the bulk temperature of the laser heats up by a few degrees centigrade the facet temperature can rise by several hundred degrees centigrade. How the facet temperature increases from a low when the laser is first turned on to a high temperature at COD has never been clearly understood. Understanding of the facet temperature rise behavior and the underlying mechanisms for facet heating are critical issues to the reliability of high power diode lasers.
