Abstract

The quest for nonlinear optical crystals with enhanced quadratic efficiency has been developed independently within mineral and organic single crystal&, each family having specific advantages and pitfalls. We propose and exemplify·2 a third strategy which aims at combining the assets of both types of moieties in a newly engineered family of organominerals, where adequately defined organic and mineral moieties arc made to cocrystallize in a polar lattice. while the mineral sublattice provides a cohesive backbone typical of ionic mineral oxyde crystals such as KDP KTP and BBO, the organic molecule is tailored to exhibit the larger hyper-polarizabilities linked to aromaticity and charge transfer.
